JAPANESE FOOD 101: WHAT's a PANCAKE LIKE OKONOMIYAKI? (VIDEO)

Okonomiyaki (お好み焼き o-konomi-yaki)  is a Japanese savoury pancake containing a variety of ingredients such as seafood, meat, snack, and vegetable.


It is served with Japanese sweet black sauce and dried mackerel and powdered seaweed on top. The name is derived from the word okonomi, meaning "what you like" or "what you want", and yaki meaning "grilled" or "cooked" (cf. yakitori and yakisoba). Tokyo okonomiyaki is usually smaller than South Japan. It is my favorite food and I can eat it any day of the week. If you come down to Tokyo, it is almost always common that customers cook it by themselves. If you can't make it, you can ask clerks to make it.
